Tampere is the host of Ice Hockey World Championship games for the second year in a row. Last year the games were played in Tampere and Helsinki, this year Tampere and Riga, Latvia. As the Home of Hockey the city is the perfect host for this highlight event.
Tampere has two successful main league teams, Ilves and Tappara. Many legendary NHL players, for example Patrik Laine and Alexander Barkov, were born and raised in Tampere and learned their ice hockey skills here. Here are our tips for your visit to Tampere, Home of Hockey!
The Capital of Chicken Wings
Chicken wings and ice hockey belong together and especially in Tampere. The city has many awesome restaurants serving wings for all tastes. For over 30 years Siipiweikot has served hungry hockey players and other wing lovers dishes with their famous wing sauce. Siipiweikot has several restaurats in Tampere.
Another one of our favorites is Hook. You can find the restaurant from the atmospheric Kehräsaari area.
Make sure to also test vegan wings in Siipiweikot and Hook!
History and legends in Ice Hockey Museum
Hockey Hall of Fame is located in Vapriikki Museum Centre. Their newly renewed permanent exhibition, demonstrates the history of Finnish ice hockey highlighting the development of the sport and its equipment, the accomplishments of the national teams. This is a must-visit place for all hockey lovers!
Relax in sauna
Did you know Tampere is the Sauna Capital of the World? With over 55 public saunas in the region you’ll definitely find your perfect place to relax. Sauna is also important for hockey teams. It’s a reward after a good game and also the place to sweat off bad feelings after a lost. We recommend visiting Sauna Restaurant Kuuma or Rauhaniemi Folk Spa.
