Learn about the colourful history of Finlayson cotton factory. While the girls worked in the factory making fabric, the factory owner and his family were growing pineapples and spending time with the emperor. Hear about the birth of the first Finnish industrial city and see what the red brick buildings are used for today. Duration of the tour: 1,5 hours.
The factories with their chimnies are still an essential part of the Tampere skyline, even they hide in them a modern vibe nowadays. The rapids created the city with the potential for using hydropower for industrial development. Gustav III founded the city 1779 after becoming exalted by the rapids view, and the city of factories and chimnies came to be. Even though industrial production ended 1970-90, the red brick buildings still serve as a stage for modern businesses. The tour takes you through Kehräsaari and the little design boutiques, the 100-year-old Market Hall, the Central Square, the national landscape of Tammerkoski and, of course, the rapids itself. Duration of the tour: 1,5-2 hours.
