The most notable church in Tampere is undoubtedly the Tampere Cathedral, constructed in the district of Jussinkylä between 1902 and 1907. The church gained its status as a cathedral in 1923, when Tampere became the capital of the diocese. The grey granite church decked with a red brick roof was constructed based on architect Lars Sonck’s drawings and it was decorated by painters Hugo Simberg and Magnus Enckell.
