Backlight Photo Festival is one of the oldest international photography festivals in the Nordic countries. Since 1987, the festival has been held in Tampere, Finland, bringing together artists, audiences and experts to explore contemporary social issues through photography and lens-based contemporary art.
The theme of the 2026 festival is The Art of Lying. The festival examines the relationship between truth, imagination and technology at a time when artificial intelligence and digital imaging technologies are transforming the way we see and interpret the world. The programme includes exhibitions, artist talks, a seminar and other public events.
The festival presents the work of 12 international artists from 11 countries. The main exhibitions are hosted at Vooninki Exhibition Hall and Photographic Centre Nykyaika in the heart of Tampere. Backlight offers a unique opportunity to experience internationally acclaimed contemporary art as part of Tampere’s vibrant cultural scene. All festival exhibitions and events are free of charge, making the festival easily accessible to both local residents and visitors.
