The strong result in the Supplier category reflects the commitment to sustainability shown by businesses in the tourism, events and hospitality sectors across Tampere and the wider Pirkanmaa region. The category evaluates the sustainability commitment and performance of local service providers within the tourism and events supply chain.
An increasing number of businesses in the region are taking a systematic approach to improving their sustainability performance and demonstrating their progress through certification. These businesses are supported by initiatives including Visit Finland’s Sustainable Travel Finland programme and the Think Sustainably service, as well as training and guidance provided by Visit Tampere.
Tampere’s overall score rose from 85.76 points last year to 86.35 points this year. This is an excellent result, and although our position in the overall ranking fell, we remain among the world’s leading destinations, and that is something we can be truly proud of. I would particularly like to thank the businesses that are committed to advancing sustainability. They deserve the credit for our outstanding joint third place in the Supplier category.
Each year, the GDS-Index measures the sustainability performance of tourism and events destinations in four categories: Environmental, Social, Supplier and Destination Management Organisation.
Sustainability work in Tampere covers environmental, economic, social and cultural sustainability. In tourism development, this means promoting equality, accessibility and inclusion, respecting local culture and supporting residents’ well-being.
Tampere ranked fifth among medium-sized cities. Helsinki once again topped the overall ranking. These results show that Finnish cities are among the global leaders in sustainable tourism.
The GDS-Index is an international programme designed to help tourism and events destinations improve their sustainability. It allows destinations to monitor their progress, compare their results with those of other destinations and identify areas for further improvement.
