What if it rains? Things to do on a rainy day in Tampere

Rain will never ruin your holiday in Tampere, so step right out of that hotel room! Although the industrial heritage views in Tampere are spectacular, there are loads of things to do indoors as well.

Interesting museums

Experience the world’s only Moomin Museum! The Moomin Museum is for art lovers and Moomin fans of all ages. The exhibits comprise a unique collection of original Moomin art donated to Tampere Art Museum by Jansson in 1986. The museum visit is completed by the cozy restaurant of the Tampere Hall, Tuhto, as well as the Moomin Museum Reading Room and shop.

Museum Centre Vapriikki is located inside an old red brick factory building right by the rapids of Tammerkoski. Vapriikki has lots to explore for the whole family. It is home to the Natural History Museum of Tampere, the Mineral Museum, the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame, Postal Museum and The Finnish Museum of Games, as well as boasting several changing exhibitions. The Museum Restaurant Valssi offers buffet lunch from Monday to Friday and if you aren’t quite that hungry grab a sandwich or a Karelian pie from the café. And don’t forget to get souvenirs from the Museum Shop. If none of these interest you much and you are more into excitement, check out either the Spy Museum in Finlayson or the Police Museum in Hervanta.

How about a bus tour directly from Tampere to the scenic Art Town Mänttä? You can reach the spectacular Serlachius by Serlachius Art & Sauna Express from the centre of Tampere, and in Mänttä you will find great art experiences, tasty lunch and a lot to see even if it rains!

Shopping and entertainment

Why break a sweat in the changing rooms on a sunny day when you can use the rainy days for shopping? Head out to Ratina, which is right in the city centre of Tampere and has plenty of fun things to do for the whole family. Make sure to pop in to Mini-Ratina playing area if you’re shopping with the young ones.  

Also when in Lempäälä, just outside Tampere, Ideapark offers plenty to keep children entertained while parents browse the shops. When hunger strikes there are plenty of restaurants and cafés to choose from.

Sightseeing and activities

Tampere is worth touring by foot even when it’s raining, so put on a raincoat and grab an umbrella! Head to Näsinkallio to see the colour displayed at the top of the Näsinneula Observation Tower and find out whether you can spot the Siilinkari Lighthouse in the distance. Rain gives the city a unique atmosphere that’s well worth experiencing. Only few minutes from Näsinkallio you can explore Särkänniemi amusement park area where you can visit Aquarium and Näsinneula Observation Tower whether it rains or shines. 

If you’re feeling a bit crazy, Entertainment Centre Crazy offers fun activities for the whole family. Irti Maasta climbing centre at Tullintori shopping centre‘s central square gives you good exercise while having fun. At Tullintori you can also solve challenging tasks in Prison Island or challenge your friends and family to a laser tag at Megazone.

There’s plenty to do in the Finlayson area even on a rainy day. Gather your friends and head to ZBase for a fierce laser battle or challenge each other on a selection of original arcade machines.

Riding Tampere’s tram is a fun experience in itself! While you’re out and about, stop by the historic Tampere Market Hall, located just next to Keskustori. With over a century of history, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a coffee and freshly baked pastries.

Go for a swim or relax at spa

A rainy day is the perfect excuse to head to the pool. If there’s a chance of getting wet anyway, why not dive right in? Spend a few relaxing hours at the Holiday Club Tampereen Kehräämö or Scandic Eden spa hotel in Nokia. Families also love Kuohu Swimming Hall in Kangasala, with its fun water slide. Other great options include the historic Pyynikki Swimming Hall in the city centre or the Tampere Swimming Centre in Kaleva, which also features an outdoor pool in summer and is easily reached by tram line 3.

Warm up in the Sauna Capital of the World

A rainy day is the perfect opportunity to slow down and experience Tampere’s unique sauna culture. Known as the Sauna Capital of the World, Tampere region offers everything from traditional wood-fired saunas and atmospheric smoke saunas to modern urban saunas.

At Kaupinoja Sauna you can experience authentic local sauna culture and take a refreshing dip in Lake Näsijärvi between sauna sessions. Rajaportti Sauna is a true historic gem and Finland’s oldest public sauna still in operation. If you prefer to start your day with a sauna, Sauna Restaurant Kuuma, located in the heart of the city offers morning sauna sessions.
