Pinsiö is a small village on the border of three towns in Tampere Region, covering area from Nokia, Hämeenkyrö and Ylöjärvi. It might be small, but Pinsiö stands out as quite the gem of environmental art.

 

Up and Under

Up and Under is an impressive piece of environmental art in Pinsiö, created by the American artist Nancy Holt (1938-2014). The art project started with a grit excavation and it was inspired by the ancient monumental art. The tunnels inside are aligned with the cardinal directions and the ponds are named “the eyes of the earth” after the Seneca natives. Nancy Holt was one of the first artists creating a modern concept of art, where environmental and land art are highly esteemed.

Nancy Holt was an internationally acclaimed developer of monumental and land art, whose works are showcased in many public collections around the world. Up and Under was constructed in 1998 and it is not only a piece of high-level art, but also an outdoor and recreational area and a place to organize events in, all at the same time. Tree Mountain

Tree Mountain is a park-like monument designed by Hungarian Agnes Denes (b.1931) , located in the village of Pinsiö, in Ylöjärvi. The mountain is 420 meters long, 270 meters wide, 28 meters high and elliptical in shape. 10 600 pines have been planted following a mathematical formula on this artificial mountain made of sand.

The Tree Mountain reinforces the humankind’s commitment to safekeeping the Earth’s ecological, social and cultural well-being in the future. The trees are all owned by private people, including statesmen such as George Bush, Lech Walesa and Martti Ahtisaari, but also by environmental influencers and regular townspeople. Artist Agnes Denes is one of the most esteemed pioneers of environmental and conceptual art of our times and her art has been showcased in exhibitions in places like MoMa – the Museum of Modern Art, Documenta VI, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
