Each year the museums of the city showcase temporary exhibitions by world-known artists in addition to permanent exhibitions, theatre enthusiasts can enjoy top-notch performances at the numerous theatres Tampere has and the city hosts more events than you could dream of! Museums
Tampere is home of the World’s only Moomin Museum. At the Moomin Museum, you’ll step into the enchanting universe of Tove Jansson’s beloved stories. The museum vividly brings to life the warmth, wisdom, humor, and excitement of Jansson’s books and illustrations. Serlachius in Mänttä houses an impressive collection of art and is one of Finland’s most important cultural institutions.
Focused of international modernism and contemporary art, the Sara Hildén Art Museum is a must see! The Museum has a grand collection of art work and hosts temporary exhibitions by world class artists. Tampere Art Museum houses an intriguing collection of Finnish and international art.
Museum Centre Vapriikki is versatile option and offers something to experience for the whole family. History, natural sciences, technology and more! In Vapriikki you can explore over ten exhibitions all at once. At the Finnish Labor Museum Werstas you can delve into the industrial heritage.
Theatre
Tampere, often called the theatre capital of Finland, boasts a vibrant and diverse theatre scene. The city is home to several renowned theatres, including the Tampere Theatre and the Tampere Factory Workers’ Theatre TTT, both of which offer a wide range of performances, from classic plays to contemporary productions.
In the recent years, many plays have been made more accessible to international audience by having translation available in English.
Tampere also hosts the annual Tampere Theatre Festival, one of the oldest and most prestigious theatre festivals in the Nordic countries. This event attracts theatre enthusiasts from around the world, showcasing cutting-edge performances and fostering a dynamic cultural atmosphere in the city.
Events
The city hosts a myriad of festivals, celebrating creativity and innovation year-round. Music, art, sports, food, dance and theatre events, take your pick, Tampere has events for each taste! Here’s a few examples:
Sports events happening in Tampere can be attended all year round! Additional to local teams in hockey, football, Finnish baseball and many more playing in multiple leagues, the city hosts international big scale sports tournaments. In 2025 Tampere is hosting the FIBA EuroBasket -tournament, we can’t wait for it!
Local ice hockey teams Ilves and Tappara have both made their way to the top, Tappara being the reigning Finnish champion for the third year in a row. The teams’ home matches can be witnessed at Nokia Arena, one of the newest multipurpose arenas in Europe!
During the summer, music festival goers can be frequently spotted on the streets. Festivals like Tammerfest, Blockfest, SaariHelvetti and Festivaali -festival have made their way to the locals hearts and many also travel to attend these events, from abroad as well! The city has also welcomed as it’s own music events like Fest Afrika, Tampere Jazz Happening and Tampere Biennale. Club gigs and smaller concert happen on most of the days in the many venues of the city!
Art festivals Mänttä Art Fest and Finlayson Art Area are both a huge hit year after year!
Interested in the film industry? International short film festival, Tampere Film Festival gathers filmmakers, students and film lovers together annually in March.
